Why protect the Keweenaw Ridge?

The Keweenaw Ridge consists of the spine of mountains that rise out of Lake Superior near  Ontonagon in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan, continue along the Keweenaw Peninsula, and terminate at Copper Harbor at the north end of US41. Adams and Stanton townships are home to many residents and businesses along the Keweenaw Ridge.

The Stanton township website states “Welcome to Stanton Township, a place to call home.” This statement is applicable to Adams Township and all the residents of, and visitors to, the counties and townships that call the Keweenaw Ridge their home. We view the Ridge from our homes, businesses, farms, and gardens. We hunt and fish on, and in view of it, and see the Ridge when we drive and boat around the area, accessing school, work, church, etc., and the many recreation opportunities the local area provides.

The current wind developer is backed by a company headquartered in London and is a subsidiary of a Texas company.  Their primary objective is to produce as much electricity as possible at the lowest possible cost. They will never call this place home.  Industrial wind development (575 foot turbines situated on some of the highest elevations points in our area) on the scale proposed by Circle Power is in direct conflict and incompatible with our way of life and way we local residents and visitors enjoy our home.

In short: YOUR tax dollars are funding OUT OF STATE / COUNTRY entities to lower YOUR property values and HEALTH.

Below are a three podcasts/videos: 1) Copper Country Today update on Guardians responses to Circle Power proposed project in Adams Township (focus on failed economics of the proposed project), 2) Kevin Martis talk on the ability of local townships to exercise their legal right to enact common sense land use regulations that protect the township’s historical, cultural, and natural resources and the health, safety, and welfare of township residents, and 3) presentation to Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition (UPEC) on environmental/conservation issues of siting industrial wind turbines in areas like the Western UP.

Listen to Presentation by Mr. Kevon Martis on "Common Sense Regulation of Industrial Wind Turbines" in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula.” This talk and Q&A session provides information on what the legal rights of townships are to effectively protect their cultural, historical, economic, and environmental attributes and the health, safety, and welfare of their residents, when the community has been targeted by industrial wind developers.
